In the Newtonian picture, gravity is just a force between two objects that have mass. In Einstein's view of the universe, where gravity is not a force, it's a curving of space time. Even with a really strong rope, even light that enters the event horizon is trapped. This is where Newtonian gravity no longer works to describe what's going on.
