Kate Morton's Homecoming
Homecoming is the first novel that Kate Morton has set almost entirely in her home country. The Gothic genre, province of fear, unsettlement and entrapment, arrived in Australia with the first Europeans. It's assumed unknowability invoked feelings of claustrophobia even while an absence of boundaries sparked anxiety. From the first there was a sense that one might lose oneself, whether to madness, homesickness, or quite literally by straying, too far beyond the Garden Gate.
