I'm a big fan of Naseem Taleb's Barville Strategy, which is essentially to have your sure bets that keep you in the game and then have wildcards. And I think that something like Digital Zell-Kasten was kind of that. It was more of a gray swan than a black swan in that I knew it was a good SEO play, but it was also sort of like, this is crazy how come nobody's done this so I'll try it.
