The Confessions of Augustine Augustine
The Confessions has kind of an equal dose of familiarity and strangeness when you read it. In some ways his culture was a lot like ours, in other ways it's very different. Augustine complained a lot about this as a bishop that people really weren't fully Christian. And so we're kind of on the other end of that equation where we kind of have one foot in the Christian past and one foot in what we call pagan or secular future.
