The Origins of Swimming Witchcraft
The trial of cold water existed for at least 800 years before anger thought to apply it to his alleged witches. Mary's son was the first English woman floated for witchcraft, but she was by no means the first person who floated overall. In this sense, swimmingly accused was just one of a large set of medieval forensic techniques called ordeals. The belief being that God would miraculously intervene to protect the innocent or punish the guilty.
