I don't think there is humanities outside of the canon. Science is nested inside an underlying ethic that presumes that pursuing the truth in relationship to knowledge of the world has this redemptive quality. But the humanities are also nested, even in some sense more self-evidently inside the idea of a canon and that canon is traditional. And if you throw out the traditional canon, I think by definition you throwout the humanities.
