Martin luther sparked a series of events which split the catholic church and europe right down the middle. Religious turmoil wasn't the only factor making france a sub parturist destination in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The other major disturbance to the peace before louis the fourteenth's reign was a long running power struggle between the nobles and the king. This chaotic environment, noble families were not only settl in scores between themselves, but also against the crown.
