The Importance of South African Wines in the British Empire
Wines from the British Empire, colonial wines, got a foothold in the British market by being cheap and accessible. And as a result, they are marketed towards probably the middle classes and the upper working classes. South African wines were just as popular in terms of exports as French wines in the middle of the 19th century.
