The NC-17 Rating: A Problem for Video Rental Stores
The porn industry figured out how to make home video a cash cow years before the mainstream video rental industry peaked. Most theater chains wouldn't accidentally book a hardcore film, thinking it was an art film because they rarely did business with anyone but the major distributors anyway. Blockbuster said they would decide on a case-by-case basis on whether to stock films. But for many independent video stores around the country, stocking adult films, rated or otherwise, was a no-brainer.
