Joseph and Hiram's Self-Defense in Carthage

Joseph, Hiram, and John Taylor barricaded themselves in a bedroom at the Hancock County Jail. Joseph told them they would move to their cell after dinner but never got the chance. The men were shot by an armed mob who broke into the jail from another room. Alex Smith reflected on this act of self-defense: "I am a dead man"
