The Story of the Tokamak Plasma Gun
The Soviets were developing a different type of machine, known as a tokamak. It was first conceived by Andrei Sakharov in the 1950s. One of the fundamental differences with this machine was that they were using stronger fields from the energy of the machine. The team ended up getting permission to go out to the Soviet Union to use the new temperature measuring devices there. And they did indeed show that the Soviet tokamack design was creating much higher temperature plasmas and therefore looked a much, much better bet as a future fusion energy power plant concept,. if you like.
