The Importance of Reading and Input in Language Learning
A speak from day one approach is that you learn a bunch of words and phrases. You memorize them as quickly as possible, and then you can start speaking. This gives you the illusion of communication or the illusion of fluency,. But it's just infinitesimally small compared to what everything else that needs to be learned. And so even if you do start off by learning a bunch of stuff at the beginning, sooner or later you've got to head into spending more time on input because otherwise you'll never get beyond the basic level of fluency.
