Wright saw islam as a potent unifying force, one that could offer an alternative to other geopolitical theologies like those contending in the cold war. He also maintained his antipathy to religion but hoped secularism would spread the spirit of enlightenment and reformation beyond europe and north america. In fact, wright's writings, both early and late, exploited the tensions we have so often observed in twentieth century african thought - between nationalism and assimilation.
