A self-directed IRA is a way for you to invest in real estate through your IRA or your Roth IRA. You have to utilize something called custodian, which is a third party that facilitates the transaction. It's not just as easy as going to Vanguard or Fidelity and buying a house through your IRA. The IRS does not describe what you can invest in in your IRA but non-traditional investments like real estate, private mortgages, limited partnerships, and tax liens are allowed.
