The Therapeutic Culture

The therapeutic culture is not socially focused, it's self-focused. We have no what Reif called, we have no collective commitments to something higher. And so the therapeutic, this was Reif's kind of final point, the therapeutic appears, it offers freedom. It makes you a slave to anxiety and disconnection from others. The metaphor of disease as a compelling part of human identity has been taken up by Susan Sontag.
