In the sixties, there were no seapelts, no air bags, no padded dash panels. The steering column could be driven rearward into the driver's chest, fatally. Door locks would often cars would pop open if you hit a curb. And when unsafey speed came out, it was a time when all crashes, death's injuries ere blamed on a driver.
