I don't think there's anything passive in Frances. Not really. I would have kept some voiceovers. She just kind of comes across as very muted. And while Frances is more, you know, taciturn than Bobby, she's not mute. They give her this passiveness that she does not have in the novel. But yeah, that being expected to read someone else's mind because they don't think they should have to express themselves or they can't articulate exactly what they want.
