The Role of Nitrogen Scavengers in the Treatment of Diabetes

The NH3 form of ammonia crosses the blood brain barrier whereas these alternative forms and especially NH4 plus are water soluble and therefore can be excreted. These nitrogen scavengers basically scavenge ammonia by creating an alternative pathway to excrete nitrogen precursors. It is really important to accept a little bit of an acidic serum pH in these patients so that these patients can convert ammonia which is NH3 to ammonium, Pradeep says.
