The Rise of Asylum in the United States
Asylum is different from the refugee system that many of our listeners will be familiar with. It doesn't protect people who are coming to the United States to seek better economic opportunities or even people who feel unsafe in their neighborhoods. Title 42 was a longstanding US public health law that goes back to the 1940s and was essentially deployed in March 2020 when the Trump administration first started responding to the pandemic.
