After release of i'm no angel, catholics formed a new entity called the legion of decency to protest the salacious motion picture. Code officer james wingate got demoted and was replaced by joseph breen who would not let hollywood internal politics keep him from enforcing the code. May acknowledged having an affair with one of the guards, mike mazurki, and she ended up getting him a part in the film belle of the nineties. But audiences were less enthusiastic about belle than they had been about any of her films. So a decision was made to break the may west mould and try something else.
