Every terrified person who phoned 999 was told to stay in their flat. Five residents from the upper floors jumped into the lift because it was inexplicably in the midst of a raging fire still in service. Black smoke flooded the lift, choking and blinding would-be escapees. The doors to the stairwell were also kept open by firefighters for their hoses as they believed they could extinguish the fire. By 1.30am, the fire had climbed up 20 floors and had reached the roof and the tower's architectural crown - made out of flammable material.
