Captain William Kidd's Treasure
Rumors flew around Long Island Sound about Captain William Kidd and his treasure. His one-time backer Lord Belmont convinced him of a hard truth. If he arrested Kidd and the captain was convicted, Belmont stood to earn £13,000 - $1 million today. With King war against France over, colonial governors lost interest in trade through piracy. Colonial governments also given authority to try and convict pirates at sea instead of having them sent back to England.
