What's the Irony of Digital Surveillance in China?
Theory underlying digital surveillance is that given enough data, you can predict how individuals will behave. China has installed huge networks of surveillance cameras and all sorts of sensors around Xinjiang. Uighur Muslims have had their DNA collected and phones scanned to see what sort of material they were circulating and reading. And beyond digital surveillance, the police have also gathered a lot of data by hand.
