Ritalin and all the kind of related ones are stimulants. They're related to amphetamine, and what they do is they kind of ramp everything up in the brain. The evidence for whether they help people who aren't starting at that lower baseline is not very convincing. Just because you need a chemical for your brain to function, that doesn't mean more of it is necessarily better. We have kind of a goldilocks spot in our brains for each of these chemicals,. Overloading it with more of them isn't necessarily a good thing.
