Introduction

The American Revolution was fought on the question of whether citizens could be trusted to govern themselves in a constitutional republic. The old world vision was that it would be a mistake to entrust citizens to sort out the most important questions that they faced. And yet here we are 250 years later now, debating that question again through the rise of stakeholder capitalism. This is what I think is really going on beneath the surface and explains some of the otherwise inexplicable fissures between within the Republican Party or Democrats.
