CO2 Levels in COPD Patients

The idea of using nasal CO2 as a surrogate for arterial CO2 seems really attractive but it's actually fraught with complication and inaccuracy. The BTS state in their oxygen guideline that waveform catnography to assess N-tidal CO2 is used primarily to confirm tracheal intubation during anesthesia intensive care. However these devices are inaccurate in patients with aeroise disease and those with high respiration so they should not be used in the management of patients with respiratory failure.
