Is the Machine of Publication Dictating How Research Should Be Done?

In general, researchers tend to study models that allow them to obtain statistically significant, replicable results in relatively short amounts of time. Do you see this as a problem generated by the machine of publication dictating how research should be done? Or is there good reason, in terms of scientific progress and clinical developments, to do things the way academi and publishing demand? Att that's a big question. I don't really have a good answer to that.
