The Kursk Offensive
The Vaffen SS had built a full-scale duplicate of Soviet's strong points. As they started pushing through those minefields, close air support was provided by the Luftwaffe. Stuka dive bombers screamed down in steep dire to drop bombs on surviving Soviet units that were holding out and holding back the German advance. The accounts of this fighting are horrific. We were totally drenched, heavily laden down with equipment, knee deep in mud all around us. Sometimes I think I can hear the incredible loud noise the German weapons, flack, artillery, mortars, stookers, niebelwurfers. They've ground their way around six miles into enemy
