Rabbinic Jews believed that reasoning can only be successful within the context of wisdom passed down through an inspired tradition. Halevi delivers a moderate critique of philosophy, like the king himself, it is admirable in its intentions, but arrogant and misguided in carrying out these intentions. Al-Kazale's works were known in Muslim Spain; they seem to have been used by Judah Halevi. Next time I look at tension between astrology and freedom in Jewish thought.
