How do you measure the stretchiness of the bubbles as they move? That sounds hard to measure. And so by shining light on it, and then measuring how much of the light gets through, you can then determine how thick the soap film is. So that's kind of like marlow's bubble shadows exactly. The concept of light hitting the bubble proved very useful when it came to understanding the physics of giant bubbles. It turns out there's a sweet spot for these polemers.
