How fast does this happen? Good question. And it doesn't need to take long. How long it takes will depend on the individual, the memory and what kind of emotional state you're in at the time. But to give an idea, the stepping stones, I would say just practice them three times in a row and then move on to the next one - that's how we rewire our default patterns.
