Henry's Plan to Take Richard Prisoner
By taking custody of Richard, Henry is already putting himself in the bad books. The deal on offer to all crusaders is that their property is protected by the guarantee of the church while they're crusading. That arrangement will look very shaky if the actual leader of the third crusade is held for ransom on his way home. But even at the lowest point of his imprisonment, Richard knows he isn't ever going to lose his head at Henry's hands. It's the Middle Ages, but it's not crazy town. There are rules, for kings at least. If Richard holds his nerve and continues to act like the king he knows he is, then he might just come through his jailhouse
