The war would continue to rage on italian soil for another 13 years. Through natural selection, the inferior roman commanders were weeded out and the survivors were far more vigilant against hannibal's tricks. Any defeat faced by the romans was nowhere near the disasters that befell them at the trebia trasamine or canai. At the start of the war, king hero the second was still sitting comfortably as ruler of syracuse, the most powerful greek city in sicily. He continued to offer his support by providing supplies and even a small degree of man power prior to the battle of canai.
