The Role of Land in the Development of the Jarts

For Jarts the fact that their fortunes were declining at the time when they saw others that are particularly subordinate caste and Dalits have some degree of modicum of success rankled. It really bothered them. The way in which I heard it said by Jart people was they consider land their daughters and their daughters in law. So there was an enormous significance given to land both not only in terms of the political economy of it but in terms of symbolism that it held within the Jart cultural landscape.
