The Colossus of Rhodes
The Colossus of Rhodes collapsed after an earthquake in 226 CE. It lay on the ground for 900 years, until it was stolen by a Jewish trader. The story that has followed is that many emperors have tried and failed to restore this statue. But there's another possibility: A Roman historian called Eusebius wrote about how often the Colossus had been rebuilt.
