So I had this feeling like I really wanted to study the most fundamental aspects of nature. And then I met Emil Wolf who ended up being my PhD advisor and he was one of the recognized masters of theoretical optics. He just sort of one day told me: "Here's a stack of papers that I recently published. Go look through them"
