The death of Mickey Mantle and his last years, and Billy Martin's too for that matter, put a kind of tragic cloud over the team in certain ways. Did you feel it that way at the time? Mickey Mantle was such a wonderful athlete and such a troubled guy, all at the same time. Well, a lot of people said Mickey didn't touch a drink until he came up to the big leagues. He was a nice, sweet kid. And listen, Mickey couldn't have played all of them games he played if he was a drinking like everybody said he was drinking. Maybe once in a while, but I think he got it after he was finished playing ball.
