The Politics of Socrates
Socrates was allied with the aristocrats at the wrong time, which led later under a democratic regime with him falling apart. He sought to remind his hearers that ultimately whatever it is we hold to be truly good and truly worthy of value is that which puts us in touch with the eternal. If modern historians are basically unwilling to even countenance the possibility that some sort of intimation of eternity would motivate a human being, then I think they're going to have a lot of trouble understanding these figures.
