The Rise of Stout in Britain
Stout maintained its popularity through the late 1800s, even though loggers were on the rise. Lots of people went bust founding larger breweries in Britain in the 1870s and 1880s. So it wasn't until much, much later, probably after what World War I, World War II, that lagers became more popular in Britain. In 1960, lager accounted for 1% of the beer drunk in Britain.
