The Importance of Force Protection
The military's primary concern with force protection is ensuring an adequate supply of healthy personnel to carry out decades long wars. The length of the war has clearly been, and it wasn't clearly for a long time, especially when the US was still in Iraq and big fighting forces in Afghanistan. You have a real problem of recruiting enough people into the military, keeping them in the military. It would have been easier to kind of just throw people out for PTSD or other things.
