Why Should You Lock Out the Knees at the Top of the Squat?

I've been told my squat shows pretty good technique. However, two coaches say i need lock out the knees at the top between each rap. I ave an old injured right knee, which seems fine using my wraps when i stand up but when i try to stand up knees locked out at the top, i do not feel very secure. Weight on the back feels like it will fall off. And feel somewhat instability on the knee. You don't actually finish the full range of motiono of the squat movement, until you're lockedout at the top. It's a resting position. If your knees are locked out something is having to support them at that angle of flexion.
