The Historical Audience of the Book of Deuteronomy

Deuteronomy is modeled on the Suzerine Treaty genre we know from Hittites and Assyrians. Joshua makes his readers contemporaneous with the epic past of the Exodus. The real readers of this book, the ones for whom it was written, are present at the Exodus. God did not simply act in the past, but is still with you today.
