We're a couple years before star track four, which is the one where they have to go back in time to san francisco and save the whales oc tis,. to deter an evil like whale probehaha, that's destroying earth. The universe of star treck is still pretty narrow all things considered. It goes from this barely popular, cancelled t v show in the sixties to like, one of the biggest, like, established franchises.

Killing Time is a classic Star Trek novel most notable for its "interesting" publication history. Della Van Hise was an OG fan fiction author who got the chance to bring her particular skills and interests to an official novel featuring Kirk, Spock, and a few other fan favorites.
