That is in quite radical opposition to the current standpoint because if character is something you choose, character is to do with the will. It has to do with what you freely determined about yourself rather than what you were involuntarily left with as a deck of cards in life. But there's another side to this that I want to bring out beyond the materialist determinism. The opposite of immediacy is mediation.
