The Importance of Openness in Argumentation

David Perry: We think that one of the functions of reason is it's not only to produce reasons to convince others. He says we should be biased because it makes sense, but there are many other things that can get in the way. In particular, he says, social constraints and our discomfort with arguments exposed exposes our ability to evaluate them as being good or bad. Perkins: But when someone gives you a good argument for a view which you disagree with, you can't help but notice that I'm going to have to deal with something like this.
