Marge livingstone at harvard has done some amazing experiments in which she raised baby monkeys depriving them of faces during the first weeks of life. They found no face preference. So my guess is that what evolution does in this case is there is a plastic anarea which is plastic, which is kind of predetermined be imprinted very easily.
