The Basics of Advertising

The FTC is the agency that's charged with enforcing what most of us think of as truth in advertising principles. The basics are any claim made in an ad has to be truthful, has to be not misleading and has to be substantiated. So you can have a situation where an ad makes a claim that's literally true but might have multiple alternate interpretations that are reasonable. There's a lot more specific things to watch out for that are like context dependent or designation of origin claims saying something's made in the USA.
