Joshua's father set up a ship chantlery business in Cape Town, South Africa. Joshua also spent time living in Algoa Bay, which is down at the bottom of Africa. In 1846 he intended to immigrate to America and boarded a ship named the Sunbeam. He then returned to America, only this time he would go to the West Coast rather than the East Coast.
