The Decline of the Fort of Bombay

The walls of the old fort had become useless for defense. The high walls interfered with the circulation of air and the deeches contained stagnant water. These walls made the city nothing, but filthy and unhealthy as these were a source of disease. A Bertor Frere was mainly responsible for the final orders of 1862 for the removal of obsolete fortifications and useless public buildings in Bombay.
