There is some historical basis to this story. In the 12 hundreds there was a social crisis where many gentry families became very impoverished and had to mortgage their lands to church bodies that had accumulated far more wealth. And naturally, resentment and bitter built up, especially on the part of this minor gentry class, against the church. So all in all, this story probably represents both the minor nobilities and also the yeoman classs resentment towards the church,. They saw as sucking up land and hoarding wealth and power and prestige - which they could do without fighting. Whereas knights went combat, whereas archers could be summoned and mustered for the king's wars, the church didn't have
